INDESCRIBABLE
I had an appointment with the podiatrist today. I have been having problems with my right foot lately. I got a steroid injection 11 days ago and also started physical therapy, which really means pain and torture. Today I received a second injection and got more medicine put on a stubborn wart on the ball of my foot. I then went directly to physical therapy for an hour. All of that to say that I am now home with my foot propped up on several pillows. I am done for the night so I finally have some time to update my blog.
It has been a busy couple of weeks. The Monday after we put the house on the market we made sure the house was clean, packed up the pop up and headed to Stone Mountain State Park in the mountains of our beautiful state. Carl had Army duty the weekend before so I braved church on my own. It did not go well. The kids were...rambucious. The younger four anyway. I ended up leaving during the worship time. I did get to hear some of the message in between finding coloring pages for little hands and trying to get 4 children 10 and under to sit still for 2 hours. Elder Chris started a new series on faith and he started with Genesis 1:1. He told us how we tend to not stop and smell the roses and really think about what happened when God said "Let there be..." He challenged us to get out and enjoy God's beautiful creation and worship Him for all that He has done. We had already planned this camping trip so it was just God's way of saying "Pay attention, Kimberly. I am about to show you some amazing things." Boy, did He ever.
Just the drive up to the mountain was amazing with beautiful fall colors. The campground was nestled in a little valley with mountains and trees all around. We arrived just about dinner time on Monday and had hot dogs, s'mores, and baked beans. We woke up the next morning to eggs and bacon and cinnamon rolls. We then cleaned up and did school until lunch time. It went extremely well with only two children having to have a discussion with the principal (Daddy). Everyone pitched in with my sweet Esther girl even taking care of doing school with Caleb while I worked with Sam and Daniel.
After packing a lunch of peanut butter roll ups and cheeze its we headed to the visitor center to do recon on the trails. They have 14,000 acres on the park so we had many choices. There were no easy ones. They were all labeled moderate or strenuous. Very encouraging since I had just had a shot of steroids in my foot a few days before. We decided to do the Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock trail. The ranger said that it had the best views of the park. When we started the trail it was okay but then it got steep and kept going up. I was very tired. The kids had gone ahead and all of a sudden I heard them start shouting. I thought something was wrong. They came running back and each child was stuttering and trying to get words out. They had found the view that the ranger was talking about. We had reached what was one of the things that gives Stone Mountain its name. We had come to Wolf Rock which is a granite face that opens up to a magnificent view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was ...spectacular. William began singing Indescribable by Chris Tomlin and several of us joined in. There are really no words to describe the beauty we saw.
It kept getting better when we came to Cedar Rock and got our first view of the real Stone Mountain. It just kept getting better and better as we walked to the old Hutchinson homestead which is right at the base of the Mountain. I was just amazed that someone actually got to live in the shadow of God's wonderful display of power. We had a great time but by that point my feet were done for the day. We made it back to the van...finally and went back to the campground for Nathan's favorite dinner, beef stroganoff, corn, and roasted potatoes. It was getting very windy so the night ended up with dump cake and a quick retreat to the camper.
The wind was so fierce that night but Esther and I got to experience God's majesty. We had to go the bathroom in the middle of the night and got to see God just show off. I have never seen so many stars in my life and I was awestruck. Esther wanted me to take a picture but no camera could capture what we saw. The next morning we woke up to egg casserole. There were no leftovers. We again did school and then headed off to hike the waterfall trails. 660 stairs later I had aching feet but had once again witnessed God's mighty power. It was incredible. The kids were wiped out and the wind was picking up once again. We had a quick dinner of Italian chicken and green beans and then once again escaped to the camper. Carl was able to get the heater in the pop up working so it was nice and toasty...until we ran out of propane in the middle of the night. It got down to about 40. Esther and I once again got to experience the stars on our trip to the bathroom and the wind was showing how powerful God truly is. I did not get much sleep as the camper was shaking most of the night.
We woke up the next morning to cereal and Carl getting the heat back up in the camper. I had to make him turn it off though because the kids would not help pack up. They wanted to be in the warmth. We finished packing up and left the mountain before lunch. We were sorry to leave but our church's ladies night was Thursday evening and I was giving my testimony. We got home and I ran upstairs to take a shower and get ready. The campground advertised cold showers but we could not find any. Esther and Tirzah tried and had no success. We were all dirty and stinky. Carl was trying to unpack and got a text saying we had a showing that evening. He did not tell me until I asked why he was vacuuming. He told me he did not want to worry me as I was getting ready to share that evening. I love that man. We all escaped out of the house, Carl to my mom's to drop off the two littlest ones and me to sequester myself in a restaurant booth to go over what I planned to share that evening. It was a busy week with more to come the next day on Friday but more on that later. The kids need to go to bed and Carl needs my assistance as the three amigos are throwing dragons across my room. We also have a showing tomorrow morning at 10.
