Memorial Day - Remember them ALL

I posted this on Facebook today and wanted to share it here as well.
I come from a strong military family. Every one of my dad's brothers and my dad served in some branch of the military.
One brother in law attended the Naval Academy and served in the Marine Corps.
Another brother in law is currently serving.
So many men in my life that have served or are currently serving.
My own sweet husband gets up every day and serves in the Army.
I have watched countless soldiers come home and suffer with disease and sickness and injuries that were a direct result from their service to our country.
I think of Rick Colbert that suffered for years from effects of fighting in Vietnam. He would eventually lose his limbs and ultimately his life as a result from his service.
I think of countless others who have come home and suffered for years. My own father fights every day with disease that is a direct result of his service in the Navy.
All you have to do is go to a VA hospital and you will find multiple men and women who have fought for our country in battle and yet come home to fight an even tougher battle for the rest of their lives. Many chose not to continue the fight and end up taking their own lives rather than deal with the pain.
Yes, we should remember every soldier who has lost their lives in battle. But we should never forget the soldiers who come home and end up spending years fighting more battles.
So many men and women that we can remember who have come home and lost their lives years after fighting in actual warfare. They should be remembered too. Honor them today by remembering them.

Facebook Post for May 28, 2018

Memorial Day
A day to remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. Those brave men and women who have fought  to maintain the freedoms we have in this great country of ours.
Today I want to honor Russell Francis Smith, my dad's cousin, who lost his life in Vietnam.
I also want to honor and remember all the men and women who have fought for our country and have come home only to fight the toughest battle here on American soil. There are countless soldiers who have lost their lives years after they have fought on the actual battlefield. The brave men and women who have fought and lost the battle with depression and PTSD. The countless soldiers who have suffered with debilitating sicknesses that were a direct result of their service to their country. So many names to remember.
I think of all the men and women lying in hospital beds suffering because they fought for our country. Yes, we should honor and remember every soldier who has lost their lives in battle, but wee should not forget those who come home and then begin fighting for their lives here at home. Honor a veteran today. Never forget their sacrifice.
So today, I say thank you to every person who has ever served in the military. You ALL are the reason our country is as great as it is. Remember and honor EVERY solider who has fought and died, whether on the battle field or here at home years later. They all deserve our thanks.
In honor of my dad who lost his cousin in Vietnam. He fights every day as a direct result of his service in the Navy,

My dad, one of the most patriotic men I know
