Alex's Surgery

If you are reading this and attend our church then I am sorry for the repeat. It was just easier for me to copy and paste the information. There is more at the bottom.

Oh my. What a week. We have all been busy preparing for Alex to have foot surgery tomorrow. You don't think about all that goes into having surgery until you have to get prescriptions, buy cast covers for the shower, buy extra pillows to prop up his leg, pack a bag for him and for me, and a multitude of other things.

So here is the deal. Alex is having his right foot and lower leg operated on tomorrow morning around 11:30. We have to be there around 8:30. They are fixing his very severe flat foot. The doctor is making an incision several inches below his knee to do some work and then they will work on his heel and foot where they will have to do bone grafts.

We will be at the Rex Outpatient Center in Cary most of the day. His surgery is a 3-4 hour long procedure. He has always been anxious about any medical procedures but this surgery is a necessity. We have been praying with and for him about this surgery and we ask that you all join us. This has been a great learning time for Alex as he is having to rely on God to calm his nerves and worries. He says he is ready but this mama is praying constantly that the Lord would just give Alex such a peace about the whole ordeal. The pain level with this surgery is very high from what we have been told. We have a two story house so he will be staying downstairs for the first week or two. He has to basically keep ice packs on the ankle and behind the knee for the first week.  Carl has to go out of town for some military duty next week so it is going to be a stressful week for our family. I am going to have to keep an eye on little ones that they do not jump on or bump their big brother. Our older children are going to have to help out a bit more than normal so pray that attitudes and hearts would  be mindful of the pain their brother will be in. This will be a great learning time for all of us and a chance to grow closer together.

The procedure has a looooong recovery time with him being a cast with no pressure on the foot for 6-8 weeks or longer and then moving to a walking cast. We are expecting 3-4 months before he gets to moving around with some ease and a full year before he is able to get back to normal. He will have to go to physical therapy for a while and then wear orthotics for the rest of his life. That is not a big deal as all of my family has foot issues and we all wear orthotics.

Please be praying with us for the surgery tomorrow and for peace in Alex's heart that God is in control and He is good even in this surgery. I am thankful for how the Lord has brought this all about. His timing is perfect. He led us to a doctor whose specialty happens to be fixing the very problem Alex has. God is so good. Thank you all for lifting Alex and our family up through these next few months.

I am going to have a lot of down time tomorrow so I will be able to update my gratefulness counting. I have been spending the last week or two really studying Psalm 103 and the topic of Biblical forgiveness. I will have some thoughts about that tomorrow as the Lord has really been working in my heart about this. I pray that this Thanksgiving month you all have been focusing your hearts on all the Lord has done for you.
